26 Degree Campaign

26 degree campaignNGO welcome first 10 five -star hotels and office buildings as partners

First awarding ceremony at Beijing's Sino-Swiss Hotel will welcome 10 partners who switched to 26 degrees!

Press Release of Beijing's environmental NGOs – Beijing, July-16, 2004

At a ceremony hosted by the Sino-Swiss hotel, the NGO coalition's first partner in this campaign, the NGO will award certificates to following hotels, office buildings and institutions: The Beijing International Hotel, The Great Wall Sheraton, the Jiang Guo Hotel Beijing, the Kempinski Hotel, The Novotel Peace Hotel, the Xinqiao Novotel, and the Sino-Swiss Hotel. Furthermore we will award the Sino-Japan Friendship Center hosting departments of the State Environmental Administration and the Policy Research Center, Beijing WenHua Palace and the Beijing Consulting Group.

These partners have responded to the call for action of China's environmental NGO from June-26 to increase their room temperature by setting the air conditioning facilities to 26 o C or above – hence to save energy, costs, and protect the climate. Many of them have taken further measures to protect Beijing's environment, which will result in a greener Beijing. At the awarding ceremony the representatives of the management will have the possibility to proudly present their activities in this respect.

Despite this first success of the campaign, the management of too many hotels and institutions have not responded positively yet to the appeal of the environmental NGO. The NGO coalition therefore hopes that the awarding event will highlight the benefits of applying energy saving measures such as the 26 degrees measure with regard to environmental protection, customer satisfaction, health care and economy. This should also convince those who are still hesitating or reluctant to join in to this small but effective initiative.

Until September-26 , the NGO coalition will increase their efforts to educate the public and convince hotels, embassies, shopping malls and other venues in order to achieve a considerable reduction of Beijing's energy consumption in this summer.

Beijing needs to save energy. 1.2 Mio KW are already missing this summer, warns Zhang Mao, Vice Mayor of Beijing. The energy consumption has increased 14% in 2004 compared to 2003 and 40% of the energy – roughly 4 Mio KW – is consumed by air conditioners. It is a little step to switch up to 26 degree – to show commitment for the sake of the environment and the citizens of Beijing.
