26 Degree CampaignTurn to 26 ℃ – for the well being of the planet and its people – Environmental NGOs in Beijing kick off their campaign for energy saving Press Release of Beijing's environmental NGOs – Beijing, June-26, 2004 Beijing's environmental NGOs kick off a joint campaign to address the increasing lack of energy in town. The campaign is organized by six environmental NGOs in Beijing: the China Association for NGO cooperation (CANGO), the Green Earth Volunteers, Friends of Nature (FoN), Global Village of Beijing (GVB), the Institute for Environment and Development (IED), and WWF China, and is supported by a broad coalition of other environmental NGOs, among them the China Association for Environment and Culture, and Greenpeace China. The campaign is to target big energy consumers such as hotels, shopping malls and office buildings in Beijing. The NGOs will request the management to increase room temperature by setting the air conditioning facilities to 26 o C or above – hence to save energy, costs, and protect the climate. Those who join the campaign will be presented with an award certificate in appreciation for their environmentally conscious and guest-friendly behavior. The certificate will be signed by the representatives from the organizing NGOs. Series of activities will follow this press conference over the next 3 months to involve more consumers to participate in this energy-saving effort. Most of the hotels and shopping malls that had been contacted show great interest in this topic but are reluctant to commit to this effort. They have cited certain international temperature standards they need to comply with without being able to provide the specific rules in writing. But there are already exemptions from the rule – managers who behave responsibly. The NGO coalition will proudly present the cases and encourage others to follow suit. Beijing needs to save energy. 1.2 Mio KW are already missing this summer, warns Zhang Mao, Vice Mayor of Beijing. The energy consumption has increased 14% in 2004 compared to 2003, and 40% of the energy – roughly 4 Mio KW – is consumed by air conditioners. The Green Olympic Committee and Beijing Municipal government have called for the big users to increase room temperature by 1 o C, and more than fifty hotels in Beijing have answered this call. The NGOs, however, seeing potentials to save more energy and the urgency to keep the global climate in check, call for the big consumers to go even further by increasing the room temperature considerably, i.e. to set it at 26 o C, thus creating a healthy environment and saving energy as well.
