Background

It is well known that China is facing enormous environmental problems. Among the 10 most polluted cities world, seven are in China. We are also the second largest producer of carbon dioxide emissions, right after the United States. China faces severe water shortage and water pollution with 80% of urban sewage directly discharged into rivers and lakes. Meanwhile, 1/6 of the nation's land is deteriorating and an estimated 5,000 species are endangered. It is obvious that the governmental alone cannot be relied upon to solve such far reaching problems. Every Chinese citizen has his/her individual environmental rights and responsibilities. Given this reality, it is crucial that we have a mechanism under which government, NGOs and enterprises can work together. It is through this framework that we endeavor to solve China's environmental problems by developing civil society and raising public awareness.
